Tiger Lil’s Long-distance Sailing

Some examples of multi-week sailing to distant destinations.

Tiger Lil is equipped for comfortable long-distance voyages. A large sail area and prep for a genniker enable great sailing in all conditions. Recently on the Bay of Naples we had Tiger Lil at over 10 kn of speed with one reef. Her two 60 HP Volvo engines easily deliver 8 – 9 kn.

We have a full galley with extra equipment. Our power is supplemented by an inverter and generator. Heating, AC, electric heads and large refrigeration completes the comfort package. See: Tiger Lil.

Valletta, Malta to Procida, Italy – 340 NM

The grand fortified capitol of Malta was a fabulous beginning to our 11 day sail. Following two days of prep, Tiger Lil pointed north towards Sicily. We had a fabulous 7 hr. downwind sail cruising at 7+ kn.

After enjoying the outstanding Sicilian cuisine at Marzamem (1), Syracuse (2) and Riposte (3), we crossed the Strait of Messina to Calabria, mainland Italy.

Morning mist at Scario

Two days in each of Tropea (5) and Scario (7) added to our port exploration time

Acciaroli offered us free docking alongside the marina wall, a short walk along the quay to cafes, resturants and the highly desired gelato.

Our final few days were easy sailing north to spectacular Amalfi and finally to our base port, pretty Procida

Procida to Corsica and return – 500NM

Choosing our weather window carfeully, Tiger Lil’s crew first stopped at Ventotene (1) and Ponza (2, 10), two little islands in the Pontine group before the 22 hour crossing to Porto Vecchio, Corsica (6).

Porto Vecchio was a delightful stop, so we did a second overnight on the return sail! The little town sits on top of a hill overlooking the well-run marina where we docked. Fun evening walking the old streets and enjoying the Corsican cuisine.

The tiny islet of Cavallo in the Bonifacio Strait was a boulder-strewn beauty but a bit pricey! Two nights in Bonifacio was worth it except for the port having cats tie off at the end of the piers that are not T-heads. A bit tricky when your hull is 3 times longer than the dock!

Heading back east we enjoyed P. Vecchio before the 60NM crossing to the picturesque Tuscan Island, Giglio. Next, southeast towards Rome and south to the Pontine Islands. The meltemi winds helped us a little; Tiger Lil sails well in all conditions!

A fantastic 12 days of sailing nearly 500 NM!

La Rochelle, France to Procida, Italy – 2000 NM

The intrepid crew of Tiger Lil cruised 2000 NM to transfer Tiger Lil from her Fontaine Pajot birthplace shipyard to her home port of Procida, Italy.

Long distance, long views

Sunrise on open ocean

Stopping at A Coruna, Spain; Porto, Portugal; Sotogrande, Alicante and Palma, Spain, as well as a few fuel stops, we saw dolphins and orcas along the way.

The intrepid ‘A Team’ crew on Tiger Lil from La Rochelle, France to Gibraltar were stalwart in the face of of tuna, dolphins and orcas.

Many tasty fish were caught! Not only excellent sailors and fishermen, they can cook!

Tiger Lil is currently at dock in Arechi Marina, Bay of Salerno.
